10 Triumph Church History (A Clock and a Compass):

Main Texts:

Payne, L. M., Jr. (2008). My people yesterday, today, and forever. Lexington, KY: Xlibris Corporation.

Supplementary Text

Pollard, N., Jr. (2020). An unfinished historical epiphany: Appearance, manifestation, and revelation of Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ, Manuscript in progress for publication.

This seminar includes discussions of where/what the Church has been, where/what it is, and more importantly, where/what it still must be.  History is a clock to tell our cultural, historical, and spiritual time of day.  Also, history is a compass to find our place on the map of human and spiritual geography.  Leading from around 1555 when the ship Jesus of Lűbeck brought the first slaves to America up to around 1864-65, the year of Father E. D. Smith’s birth, the seminar includes Triumph Church history in seven periods conceived as opening seven seals:

  1. The Creation Period (1500-1900)—in this period the soil of history was plowed to prepare the consciousness of Father Smith to receive the revelation that created Triumph, the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ.

  2. The Birth Period (1899-1921)—in this period a number of births and firsts occurred, including founding of Triumph the Holy Righteous Church (1902), opening the doors of the Church to the world (1904), the birth of the Kingdom and Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ (1915), the Corporation was born (1918), first National Meeting (1915) and first International Meeting (1919).

PAGE 3

  1. The Bishops’ Period (1920-1940)—in this period the leadership of the Church shifted from one man to seven men. The first three years were described by Bishop E. D. Hadley as a period when the Church was in bondage. The seven men rejected the directive of Father Smith and called themselves bishops. Around 1927 Bishop J. D. Barber left Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ and formed Triumph the Church of the New Age

  2. The Period of Growth (1939-1951)—in this period the Church realized significant increases in the number of clergy, churches, and members. Causes are discussed for this period. Under the leadership of C. C. Coleman as Chief Bishop, four other Bishops made major contributions in this period: C. C. Atkinson (3rd District), Earl Simpson (5th District), R. B. Harris (6th District), D. H. Harris (7th District).

  3. The Arch Bishop’s Period (1950-1980)—R. B Harris (1951-1955); D. H. Harris (1955-1980) led the Church as Chief Bishops. Bishop D. H. Harris became Chief for Life in 1959 with title of Arch Bishop. This period built on the growth of the previous period and acquired significant financial wealth and lost it because of poor management and inadequate organizational structure. During the administration of the Archbishop, two churches emerged in the Kingdom Church: A Southern Church and Northern Church.

  4. The Period of Decline or the Second Bishops’ Period (1980-2000)—with the death of Arch Bishop D. H. Harris in 1980, the Church experienced a dramatic decline of human, physical, and financial resources in this period similar to that experienced by the death of Father E. D. Smith in 1920.

  5. The Apostles’ Period (1999-Present)—in the year 2000, the Church began to shift to a structure of senior leadership that included apostles not bishops.

Thought: Those who do not know the history of Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ are condemned to repeat it.

Question: During the Apostles’ Period (1999-Present), has Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ repeated the mistakes of the Bishops’ Period (1920-1940) and the Apostles’ Period or the Second Bishops’ Period (1980-2000)? This seminar sheds light on thinking about this question.
